a guy with a sword and shield has no benefit over a guy holding a sword with two hands (unless it's a magic shield).Īgreed. The problem with +1 to hit is that it negates a shield. Problem with +1 to damage is a longsword becomes equal to a two-handed sword against man sized opponents (1d8+1 is equivalent to 1d10 in terms of average damage). adding +1 to hit or +1 to damage is common. Variant house rules float around for such. Obviously a spear can be used either one or two handed but I would think control would be easier. For instance, a long sword is a one handed weapon but what if you used it two handed. My question then was how totreat two handing a regularly one handed weapon. I also can't find any explicit reference to what weapons must be wielded two handed anywhere, so someone with a sharper eye let me know if I'm missing it.Īs a rule of thumb I'm assuming that anything 5 feet and over is a good candidate for 2 hander, but that's just intuition. A bastard sword is right on the borderline. A two handed sword is very heavy (250gp) and meant for large, arcing swings, and is 6 feet long. Length is the determiner here I think, as it is 4-1/2 feet long, most of the standard 2 handed pole arms are at least 5 or 6 feet long. The bastard sword is an interesting case. with an dagger or hand axe in the other hand). Nor, for that matter, is there any rule saying that one of these weapons can't be used for two-weapon fighting (i.e. Munchkin implication: Nowhere in the rules does it say that a 2-handed sword, or a pole arm, or any other weapon normally thought of as a "two-handed" weapon, cannot be used in combination with a shield. That one-and-only place is a footnote to the "bastard sword" entry on the AC adjustment table, which says "Treat as a longsword if used one-handed." A Battle Axe is a one handed weapon.įun fact: Only one place in the PHB or DMG, so far as I've yet been able to find, says anything about weapons being "one-handed" or "two-handed". Helps me to conceptualize striking and reach issues too.īrightmantle wrote:As far as the DMG and info on the battle axe and how it is used, page 16 of the Dmg on the subject of a fighters followers indicates that a Battle axe is used with a shield. So I would go with battle axe 1 handed, and then offer up a lochaber axe, a voulge or a bardiche as your two hander option, with the bardiche losing to the lochaber axe for space required, but edging out both of the others for speed (9, not 10). I think that the speed for the axe is similar to that for a flail or mace as they are wielded in a similar, slashing motion, rather than a stabbing one. This is probably decisive all of the long two handed weapons are slower than this (there are some exceptions, tridents, spears and bo sticks are all long but not quite as slow, but these are liminal I think). The battle axe is 4’ long, no longer than a morning star or flail, and its weapon speed factor is 7. Alternately a lucern hammer requires its length in space to swing, suggesting you are holding the shaft one hand right near the bottom the other about ¼ up. Take the Lochaber axe above, it is 7’+ long but only requires 2’ space to use, this suggests you put your hands at the 1/3 and 2/3 marks on the shaft so only about 2-3’ is needed for the swing. Take the pole arms, you can either stab someone with one, which doesn’t need too much space in front of you, as you can pull the weapon back before thrusting, or you can swing it at them, which requires a good amount of space. This is interesting, as many associate needing two hands for the weapon with its weight, whereas this suggests that it is the unwieldiness of the weapon that matters. It appears that weight, damage and space required do not correlate well with two handed wielding, but length does, and weapon speed factor does. Much heavier, a bit longer, but the main difference is speed factor, higher for both. Now look at two other "axes" on the list, both pole arms and 2 handed weapons: Much heavier than a battle axe, with similar length/space/speed dimensions, but the morning star is a 1 handed weapon. How about weight, the lucern was 150gp, what about a morning star? Heavy and long, and slow compared to battle axe. Now a "control", something we know to be a case of a two handed weapon, definitely a pole arm, the lucern hammer. Obvious first comparison is the hand axe:Ĭlose in weight but far off in terms of weapon speed, length, etc. Ulan has a 1 hour subway ride to kill, so here I go!
